Career guidance in general secondary education – Perspectives from Central and Eastern Europe

September 25, 2025 , 17:0018:30
Career counselling plays a central role in supporting students as they navigate the transition from education to professional life. In Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, school counsellors contribute to this process by offering guidance, assessment, and planning tools tailored to the specific needs of secondary education. While the contexts differ, the shared objective is the same: to help young people in general secondary education identify their strengths, make informed choices, and prepare for the labour market.
This event provides an opportunity for an in-depth exchange of perspectives between professionals from the four countries, highlighting both common approaches and differences in practice. Through comparative analysis, the discussions will focus on how national experiences can inform and strengthen the quality of career counselling services in general secondary education across the region.
Guests:
  • Radu Oprița, psychologist and school counsellor (Romania). With 22 years of professional experience, Radu has worked in organizational psychology – developing strategies, conducting assessments, and contributing to public policy as a member of the Romanian Psychologists’ College – as well as in education, where he supports students at “Theodor Costescu” National Economy College through counselling, coaching, and career planning. His professional background offers valuable insights into the intersections between organizational psychology and school counselling.
  • Marcela Faráriková, career counsellor from Gymnázium V. B. Nedožerského Prievidza general secondary school (Slovakia)
  • Lajos Pálvölgyi (HU) is an education researcher and leader of a pilot program for career education in secondary schools in Hungary
  • Career counsellor from general secondary schools in Czechia.
The key themes for discussion include:
  • Similarities and differences in career counselling practices in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.
  • Transferable skills and methods that can be applied across national contexts.
  • The potential contribution of organizational psychology to vocational and career counselling in schools.

Join us for a constructive dialogue that will bring clarity, exchange of experience, and practical insights into the future of career counselling in secondary education.

This event will be held in English with translated captions to Czech, Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak.
